On September 15, 2022, Shanghai Pudong New Area Science and Technology Association, Shanghai Pudong New Area New Energy Association and Shanghai Green Year Environmental Protection Service Center co-organized the 13th Shanghai Pudong New Area Academic Annual Conference and 2022 New Energy Industry ESG and Dual Carbon Strategy Exchange Meeting successfully held in Zhangjiang, Pudong.

The meeting was chaired by President Xiong Jian. Gu Bing, secretary of the Party Group and Executive Vice Chairman of the Pudong New Area Association for Science and Technology, pointed out in his speech at the meeting that under the "double carbon" goal, new energy investment and environmental, social and corporate governance, that is, ESG, have gradually become the two hot spots of current economic development. The ESG concept will be conducive to the future sustainable development of new energy enterprises in the three aspects of "innovation", "solid" and "robust", and with the full implementation of the new energy strategy and the effective implementation of the ESG investment concept, it will help promote the early realization of China's "double carbon" goal and promote the development of China's new energy industry to enhance China's voice in global governance.

The conference invited ESG experts from three international organizations to share ESG cutting-edge ideas with many new energy company executives. Ms. Yalin Wang, Policy Analyst and Head of the Sustainable Investment and Business Group of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in China, introduced the development of UNDP sustainable investment and low carbon innovation projects, from corporate Social responsibility (CSR) to ESG and SDG financing. She detailed the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) and how they are targeted and selected by investors for portfolio design. She mentioned that UNDP has used the SDGS to develop SDG investor maps for 15 countries, and is about to launch a global dynamic platform to share data with investors to help them identify SDG-impact investment opportunities.

Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) is the world's largest independent third-party evaluation platform. It assesses the non-financial performance of the world's 2,000 most influential public companies in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) across seven transformation systems and ranks them against their global peers. Vicky Sins, WBA's Director of Climate and Energy, shared a leading example of ESG performance by a leading Chinese company in the global automotive industry. She also shared the ranking criteria in the power sector and the application of "just transition" assessment indicators in traditional sectors towards low-carbon development.

Ms. GUI Xuan, Head of Corporate Partnerships and Suppliers at the London-based Global Environmental Information Center (CDP) China Representative Office, introduced delegates to CDP's ESG solution for smes looking to join the global supply chain, namely the disclosure and management of corporate environmental information. She also introduced to the guests more new information disclosure requirements and countermeasures at the level of corporate compliance and supervision of listed companies at the domestic and foreign policy levels.

Ms. Ni Huan, Director of the ESG Development Promotion Center of the Association, introduced the development history of ESG at home and abroad and typical cases of new energy ESG at home and abroad, and introduced the work objectives and tasks of the operation of the center, that is, under the leadership and support of the Pudong New Area Science and Technology Association, continue to focus on the new energy industry and ESG issues; Cooperate with multiple professional institutions to carry out in-depth cutting-edge ESG industry research; Actively cooperate with professional institutions, including international organizations, to establish an authoritative ESG training system and carry out various forms of ESG science popularization activities. She especially mentioned that it will also cooperate with new energy enterprises to organize novel youth ESG-themed social practice activities, ESG project-based learning (PBL), ESG-themed competitions and youth ESG career planning for young college students, in order to continuously deliver high-quality ESG talents for more new energy enterprises. Director Ni Huan said that she will actively promote the exchange and cooperation between the New Energy Association and more than 300 global allied institutions of the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA), especially the exchanges between ESG standard-setting institutions, multilateral international organizations and multilateral financial institutions on the WBA platform. To provide new energy enterprises with more cutting-edge and pragmatic ESG performance improvement tools and capacity building information.

 

In the meeting exchange session, Ms. Wu Mingxia, vice president of the association, deputy general manager of Shanghai Aowei Technology Development Co., LTD., and deputy director of the National Automotive Supercapacitor System Engineering Technology Research Center, introduced the application of high-energy supercapacitors in new energy buses and ships to the guests.

Huang Ningjun, secretary-general of the Hydrogen energy Special Committee under the Association and general manager of Shanghai Hydrogen Blue New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. introduced the carbon reduction practice cases of hydrogen energy technology to the guests.

At the end of the meeting, President Xiong Jian announced the appointment of Liu Gang, Secretary-General of the Association, as the group leader of the "zero-carbon beautiful Countryside Special Research Group". Secretary-general Liu Gang introduced the five-level framework content of the subject, that is, the association should mobilize new energy enterprises to investigate rural construction, actively interact with relevant universities and national laboratories related to low-carbon technology, and guide the effective transformation of scientific and technological results in the rural scene; It should play the role of "information platform" when actively responding to and responding to the eager needs of low-carbon development and rural revitalization in various towns and villages; Combining low-carbon development and ESG investment concepts, exploring innovative models of green inclusive finance in rural revitalization; The courage to develop verifiable and replicable model exploration and landing pilot projects; Under the leadership of the Pudong New Area Association for Science and Technology, the association should also have the public in mind and be willing to contribute, take the construction of zero-carbon beautiful countryside as an important popular science carrier for the public and young students to carry out the double-carbon goal, teach through fun, cooperate with primary and secondary schools and colleges and universities, and hope to involve more stakeholders in the process from creativity to implementation.
